Appleton Campus
About the Appleton Campus
- Home to operations focused on medical devices and performance solutions
- Supports product development and testing in a range of environmental conditions
What We’re Testing For
- We’re actively investigating groundwater and soil near the Appleton Campus for the presence of PFOA (a type of PFAS)
- All sampling and analysis are conducted in close coordination with the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE)
Recent Testing Activities
- Jan 2025: Installed 4 new monitoring wells near the southern boundary of the campus
- Nov 2024: Conducted residential well sampling at nearby properties west of the site
- July 2024: Collected 7 soil borings to assess subsurface conditions

Monitoring Well Locations
This aerial image shows the Appleton campus in Cecil County and highlights Gore’s environmental monitoring efforts — specifically tracking groundwater near the site:
- Shallow Monitoring Well: These wells are installed near the surface to test groundwater for PFOA and related PFAS substances that may be present in upper soil or water layers.
- Deep Monitoring Well: These wells extend further underground to detect potential contaminants in deeper groundwater or bedrock-level aquifers.
- Property Lines: Outlined boundaries show the official footprint of Gore’s Appleton Campus, helping clarify which wells are on-site versus adjacent.
An Overview of Monitoring Activity
- Gore has installed 20+ monitoring wells across and around the Appleton Campus to study groundwater conditions. This includes both shallow and deep wells placed near buildings, open fields, and along campus edges.
- Wells are placed strategically near water features. Several wells are located close to streams, ditches, or downhill flow paths to assess whether PFOA could be migrating through surface or subsurface water routes.
- Residential areas are included in testing efforts. A defined sampling zone just west and south of the Appleton site includes homes where Gore has offered private well sampling to check for any potential offsite impact.
- Testing area helps capture diverse groundwater flow patterns. The campus is intersected by roadways and rolling terrain, so wells are spread across various elevations to track how water might move beneath and around the site.
- Soil borings and third-party sampling are also underway to complement well data and assess how deeply PFOA may have traveled underground.

About the Campus
Gore’s Appleton campus has played a vital role in product innovation since the mid-1980s and is located on Airport Road in Cecil County. The Appleton Campus includes four manufacturing buildings and supports a range of capabilities, including the development, testing, and production of medical devices, sealants, fibers and filtration and venting materials. Facilities here contribute to Gore’s broader sustainability and product performance goals, with a focus on durable materials used in demanding industrial and consumer environments.
